What the Owners Say
"It’s a wonderful house, full of history and unique features. It’s been a special place for us and our family — our grandchildren have grown up visiting here, digging in the garden, and making bug homes. It’s been our pleasure to be custodians of the past, and now it’s time for someone else to take that on."
Our Thoughts…
Step back in time and experience something truly special with this utterly charming, Grade II-listed thatched cottage in the heart of North Luffenham — a home steeped in over 350 years of history, yet full of warmth, character, and life.
Once part of the County Nuns’ Convent, this unique home dates back to the mid-1600s and has lived many lives over the centuries — from a place of religious retreat to the village haberdashery in the early 1900s. There’s even a carving in the old fireplace that dates to 1647, and a piece of the original convent still stands as part of the garden wall, a visible reminder of the cottage’s fascinating past.
The current owners fell in love with it at first sight:
"It only took one viewing for us to decide to take the plunge — it’s such an unusual and interesting property with years of history to enjoy."
They’ve lovingly cared for it over the years, exposing original tiled floors, maintaining the thatch, and restoring the single-storey roof with reclaimed Welsh slate, all while preserving its authentic charm.
The accommodation spans over 1,200 sq. ft and is brimming with period features, including exposed beams, deep-set windows, and those wonderfully worn historic tiles that tell their own story.
On the ground floor, you’ll find a large, welcoming living room — the owners’ favourite room — with space to gather and relax. Across the hallway, the dining room is a beautiful, atmospheric space with exposed stone walls and French doors leading out to the garden. There’s also a separate breakfast room and a WC/utility room for convenience.
The kitchen is bright, practical, and full of personality, with painted units, solid worktops, and a classic range cooker — perfect for family meals or cooking for friends.
Upstairs, there are three bedrooms and a versatile landing space currently used as a study. The principal bedroom is a peaceful retreat with views over the village rooftops. The family bathroom is another standout, with a vibrant freestanding roll-top bath and painted panel walls that make it feel like something from a storybook.
The rear garden is as enchanting as the house itself — mature, well-stocked, and full of colour in the warmer months. There’s a patio seating area for summer dining, a large lawn, and tucked away in the boundary wall is that original fireplace from the Convent days — a true one-of-a-kind feature.
The property also benefits from driveway parking for one vehicle.
North Luffenham is a picture-perfect Rutland village with a thriving community, great local amenities and a real sense of belonging. There’s a pre-school and primary school, and the well-loved Fox Country Pub is right at the heart of the village. Golfers will enjoy nearby Luffenham Heath Golf Club, and day-to-day essentials can be picked up at the excellent Edith Weston Village Shop & Post Office just down the road.
The owners told us:
"The village is a wonderful place to live — there’s a great community spirit and we really hope to stay in North Luffenham when we downsize."
